More Than Basketball

More Than Basketball

I recently sat down with Pastor James to talk about what our 30+ basketball group is really all about. We talked about how we want it to be a positive space for guys to build each other up and form real friendships through sports. Aside from our quick prayer before we play, we don’t do a lot of “churchy” things, but we try to lead by example.

Last week, I saw exactly why that matters.

I was subbed off and catching my breath when I started talking to one of the regulars who isn’t affiliated with our church. He’s a friend of a friend who just showed up to play one day. As we were chatting about soccer and basketball, he told me how much he loves this group. He said the guys are competitive but still kind. He even mentioned that if it wasn’t such a good group to be around, he wouldn’t bother making the drive.

We ended up talking about how sports is one of those rare places where it feels okay for men to compliment and encourage one another. He told me it’s actually very healthy for men to have a place like that.

That conversation was a great reminder for me that it’s always about more than basketball. Every time we hit the court, we have a chance to make a connection and be an example for someone else. We aren’t just playing a game, we’re building a community one jump shot at a time.
